We could not be more thrilled by the news that the SPAB's Old House project has been shortlisted for the Museum+Heritage Awards Restoration or Conservation Project of the Year.

In anticipation of a talk in March on their collaboration, we looked to our archives to explore John Piper’s involvement in the establishment of our Betjeman Award over 30 years ago, to honour his friend’s love of ancient churches.

Stonemason Tom Flemons received the award for his outstanding personal contribution both to traditional building skills and support of the SPAB Fellowship.

Our John Betjeman Award for excellence in conservation at places of worship celebrates its 30th year. The 2020 winner is Tenterden Methodist Church, Kent for the exemplary repair of a war memorial pipe organ.

Despite the disruption caused by Covid-19 to its format this year, the SPAB’s Philip Webb Award drew a record-breaking number of entries, with 31 schemes received from individuals or teams who, between them, represent 19 schools of architecture across the UK.

The Award is presented each year to the person who best embodied the working party spirit - a warm mixture of generosity, dedication and enthusiasm. This year, the first year, it was awarded to Britt Harwood.
