Learning

Training, sharing knowledge and helping people to develop their practical skills have always been at the heart of the SPAB's work.

Our renowned Scholarship and Fellowship schemes and new Millwrighting apprenticeship continue the practice established by the SPAB’s co-founder, architect Philip Webb, of training building specialists and craftspeople on site. We also offer a varied annual programme of short courses, conservation masterclasses, hands-on workshops, seminars and lectures for those who work with and care about old buildings.

Our resources for young people and careers advice can help you get started, and our annual Working Party offers a unique opportunity to learn alongside experts while gaining practical on-site experience.

We deliver hands-on workshops, masterclasses, seminars, lectures and short courses across the UK and overseas, and webinars online, each year.

The SPAB are pleased to now be offering some of our courses, lectures and CPD sessions online.

The working parties offer a uniquely practical opportunity to learn from some of the country's leading craftspeople in a relaxed setting at a building in need of repair.

A unique training programme for early career architects, surveyors and engineers to gain the skills and knowledge they'll need to work with traditional buildings.

To counter a decline in traditional millwrighting skills, the Mills Section is working on setting up  Millwrighting Training.

The SPAB aims to inspire young people to appreciate old buildings and to perhaps even become the building conservation professionals of the future.
