Gloria e Marco Award

The SPAB has been proud to support this award, created in memory of two talented young Italian architects working in London – Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi - who lost their lives in the fire at Grenfell Tower.
Shortly before the fire in June 2017, conservation architect Peregrine Bryant, a longstanding SPAB supporter and member, had employed Gloria at his practice.  Her colleagues were devastated by Gloria and Marco’s death, mourning two young people whose work was full of promise. The practice, and many others, were determined to make a modest but positive response to the tragedy and so established a memorial fund in the couple’s name: the aim to provide an annual award to enable talented Italian graduates interested in conservation – as Gloria and Marco were – to visit the UK to study and gain experience.
The award comprises a structured programme including:
• Work experience in architectural and engineering practices, as well as spending time with Historic England, the Landmark Trust, the SPAB and other bodies involved in the conservation of historic buildings in the UK.
• Attendance at relevant training courses including the SPAB Repair of Old Buildings Course.
• Opportunities to explore and develop hands-on conservation skills by taking part in the SPAB’s annual Working Party.
• A bursary to support travel and living costs during the programme.
The award is supported by the other practices who employed Gloria and Marco during their time in London, their families and friends, and by their university, the IUAV in Venice.  It was inaugurated at a reception at the Landmark Trust’s Villa Saraceno in the Veneto in June 2018.  Candidates are selected from the IUAV on the basis of their submitted portfolio and an interview.
The Gloria e Marco Award is an inspiring opportunity to broaden the skills and experience of outstanding Italian graduate architects and to exchange knowledge about conservation thinking and practice. It will be a lasting and fitting memorial to the life and talents of Gloria and Marco.

The aim is to endow a fund to provide an annual bursary of £7,500.  Fundraising continues and any donation is very much appreciated.
