We were recently consulted on proposed changes to St George’s in West Grinstead, Sussex to accommodate its bat population. We asked The Bats in Churches Project, to tell us more about protecting historic buildings and bats.

Our archive contains a collection of magic lantern slides which are being catalogued by volunteers. We are rediscovering some wonderful images of ancient buildings and structures around Britain.

The SPAB manifesto urges those who care for old buildings ‘to put Protection in the place of Restoration’. We looked in our archive to see some church casework of carried out by early members.  

The Grade I listed church of St Mary, Haddiscoe is a prominent landmark in south east Norfolk. It is no surprise to find that such an historic church has, a number of times, engaged the attention of the SPAB.

We explore an unusual example of when John Ruskin became actively involved in a fundraising campaign to save a medieval church.

To the lovers of ancient buildings it is the ‘feel’ of a building that makes them ‘great’. For SPAB member Allan Ockenden nowhere fits this bill better than the tiny medieval chapel at Yatton, tucked away in a corner of the Herefordshire countryside.
