Event details
Saturday 18 May, 11am - 4pm
Join the Dorset Group on a visit to the historic hamlet of Coombe Keynes, with its rich local history stretching back before the Domesday Book.
On our visit we'll explore the beautiful Holy Rood Church, which is now redundant and in the care of the Coombe Keynes Trust. Parts of the church date to the thirteenth century, including the tower with its pyramidical roof, while much of the rest of the building was substantially rebuilt in the Victorian era.
After a buffet lunch, we’ll take a short walk to see the village, discuss its local geology, and take a closer look at one or two historic buildings in the hamlet.
Programme
11am – Meet at Holy Rood Church for refreshments and discussion
12pm – Talk about the church and the establishment, achievement and ambitions of the Coombe Keynes Trust
1pm – Buffet lunch
2pm – Introduction to the history of the village and local geology, followed by a short walk to see the village and look at one or two of the older buildings
