Event details
Saturday 22 June, 10.30am – 2.15pm.
Join the Essex Group on a visit to Great Bevills and the nearby Chapel of St. Stephen.
Great Bevills was built circa 1490 and extensively repaired in the early 20th Century when the north and south gable ends were rebuilt. The interior has fine carved and moulded beams and many original features. Overlooking the Stour Valley, the gardens are formal and Italianate in style with Irish yews and mature specimen trees. This is private home of the Probert family who have kindly permitted this visit.
The nearby St Stephen’s chapel was built in the second decade of the 13th century by one Gilbert de Tawny, a local landowner. It was abandoned at the Reformation and was used variously as a barn and in 1734 as a hospital during a local plague. It was repaired to its present condition in the 1930s by members of the Probert family, and re-consecrated.
