Join the SPAB Greater Manchester Group for a very special talk in their ongoing series, 'Journey of a Master Craftsperson' with this talk on preservation of historic decorative finishes, in particular, raised relief wallpapers.
Frank Holmes will share his expertise in repairing some of the UK’s finest surviving Victorian raised-relief wallpapers, discussing his career journey from early work as a painter and decorator to his specialism in the rescue and repair of Victorian raised-relief wallpapers, including Lincrusta, Anaglypta and Tynecastle.
He will showcase his projects where he faced multiple challenges and found the best way to repair or remake the Victorian raised-relief wallpapers and the decoration.
The talk will include close-up examples of historic wallpaper and decoration within The Britons Protection itself, giving attendees the chance to better understand these materials in context.
The Britons Protection is one of Manchester’s most distinctive Grade II-listed pubs, the 1806 building is known for its Regency character, preserved 1930s interiors, snug rooms, terrazzo-tiled corridors, moulded ceilings and vintage bar fittings - a venue where examples of these types of wallpaper and decoration can be seen, touched and better understood.
