Up to 400 Scottish churches are expected to close by 2025. As ecclesiastical buildings, even unlisted old church buildings are protected from various harms. But with churches flooding onto the open market, we’re concerned many of these historic buildings will fall through the cracks.
Join us for a series of five online talks investigating the ongoing issue of church closures in Scotland, and how these buildings and communities can be helped.

Scotland's Churches: History of Closure
Why are churches facing such upheaval now? Simon Green of Historic Environment Scotland gives an overview of the history of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland and its buildings to shed light on current events.

What does the church see as the future for its remaining buildings? Jamie McNamara at the Church of Scotland will present its aims and future thinking.

Scotland's Churches: Rescuing the Unloved
Can communities save their church? Find out how Historic Churches Scotland is working with communities to secure their churches’ future through conservation and creative regeneration.

Scotland's Churches: Recording of Objects
What happens to the objects inside a sold-off church? Everything from hymn books to organs needs to be described and noted. Dr DJ Johnson-Smith of Scotland’s Churches Trust will explain how.

Scotland's Churches: Community Ownership and Funding
Could you rescue your local church? Sarah Pearce of Heritage Trust Network will offer advice on how to take on your local church, and vital things to consider before taking the plunge.

Join us in Edinburgh for an in-person visit to explore the theme of church closure. Time and location TBC. Tickets will be sold separately and do not form part of the online talk block booking.

About SPAB Scotland
Members of the SPAB living and working in Scotland decided to form their own semi-autonomous group in 1995. Scotland has its own building traditions, architectural language and property laws, all of which are best dealt with locally. All members of the SPAB residing in Scotland are automatically members of SPAB Scotland.
