Tour of St Anne's Church, Limehouse, London
with a talk by architect Julian Harrap

7 September 2021, 18:00 - 20:00 (BST)
FULLY BOOKED

Join the SPAB and the Betjeman Society for a visit to the remarkable church of St Anne's, Limehouse, one of the five churches designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor under the Fifty New Churches Act of 1711.  Completed in 1730, the east London landmark building was gutted by fire in 1850 but rebuilt and is listed Grade I for its architectural significance.

We will explore its history and design, and over forty years of repairs, which have included Julian Harrap’s stabilisation of the roof, and conservation of the tower stonework, which won the first SPAB John Betjeman Award in 1990.

Presented as part of the SPAB’s celebration of 30 years of its John Betjeman Award for excellence in conservation and repair at places of worship, this event includes talks by Julian Harrap and Professor Michael Hebbert, Chairman of Care for St Anne's, who will describe Sir John Betjeman’s role in the Hawksmoor revival and rescue of St Anne’s, along with a guided tour and opportunity to hear about current projects.

Julian Harrap is principal of Julian Harrap Architects LLP and has worked on significant design and conservation projects in the UK and overseas, including the Neues Museum, Berlin.

The lecture will be followed by an informal drinks reception.
