Join the London Group for a fascinating insight into the changing fortunes of Clevedon Court, a medieval country house.
Our speaker is Julia Elton whose father Sir Arthur Elton, gave Clevedon Court to the National Trust in the early 1960s after years of discussions and negotiations.
The process was not straightforward. One representative of a distinguished national organisation thought that the magnificent medieval house should be left to become a ruin, while others, including the SPAB, supported it being repaired.
The whole story is a marvellous insight into the politics of conservation in the aftermath of the Historic Buildings Act of 1953, and the curious characters involved.
The talk will include part of Sir Arthur’s lecture, ‘Vicissitudes of a Country House’ which gives his very personal view on the whole saga.
Speaker
Julia Elton is a past President of the Newcomen Society for the History of Engineering and Technology. She is the daughter of Sir Arthur Elton, who gave the family home Clevedon Court to the National Trust.
