Learn about how Peter James followed his dream of reconstructing a windmill from a mill base.
From the ruins of Ockley mill base, the story of the rebuild is told in a number of well-defined chapters.
Starting with the dream, setting out timelines and objectives, and tacking the necessary planning permissions, are detailed together with the trial and tribulations of such.
As the story is told, the immense size of the project becomes clear, together with the obstacles to overcome. Much emphasis is given on the meticulous research carried out to achieve as authentic a rebuild as possible. Profusely illustrated throughout with pictures as well as detailed drawings.
The story concludes with what it is like to live in a windmill, future work, and finally lessons learned for others to follow.
The lecture is aimed at mill enthusiasts, including heritage professionals, millwrights, mill owners and volunteers.
Booking closes Wednesday 3 December, 10am. Anyone who has booked a place will also be sent a recording of the lecture after the event.
Peter James’ passion for mills started in the early 1960’s when he frequently stayed near Herne mill in Kent. His interest was further stoked by a week’s holiday on the Norfolk Broads.
As a time served mechanical engineer by trade, he held various roles in both engineering and management, which served him well when he got involved with Lowfield Heath Windmill, where he became a founder trustee, volunteer leader and project manager overseeing the project to dismantle the mill and move it to a new site nearby. The reconstruction and repair was done historically accurate and used traditional materials and techniques where possible.
In this millennium, he was lucky enough to fulfil a lifelong dream of living in a windmill, with the knowledge gained at Lowfield Heath. He has also been involved with fighting off the proposed conversion of Shipley windmill. Recently retired he has joined the SPAB Mills Committee as a Guardian.
