Join the Sussex Group on a visit to the restoration project at Madeira Terrace, Brighton, with an exclusive tour of the site led by JT Mackley & Co, the main contractor.
At 865 metres long, the Grade II* listed Madeira Terrace is, to quote the listing description, ‘very rare being the only known, land-based, monumentally scaled, iron promenade in England, and possibly worldwide, thought to be the longest continuous cast iron structure in Britain and probably the world’. It is ‘a bespoke and innovative structure utilising the properties of wrought and cast-iron to provide a decorative and technical solution in a challenging location’. It is in effect a pier that has run aground on the seafront, providing shade and shelter to promenaders.
Phase 1 of the Madeira Terrace restoration project, started in 2024 and is now nearing completion. This involves the meticulous repair of 28 of the oldest cast-iron arches.
A representative of the main contractor JT Mackley & Co will provide us with details of the project and answer questions.
