The Challenges of Windmill Conservation

The lecture will compare the current techniques used in the repair of windmills with traditional techniques used by the old-time millwrights. Luke Bonwick will draw on his experience of a range of conservation projects from across the country. This will include insights and advice collected during 25 years of practical work with a number of specialist millwrights and millers.

Speaker information:

Luke Bonwick is a building surveyor and millwrighting consultant with a longstanding interest in traditional mills, particularly windmills. He currently works as a Conservation Officer for Kent County Council, a role which carries responsibility for managing the repair and maintenance of KCC's eight timber-framed windmills. Since 2004 Luke's consultancy work has supported the owners and guardians of mills and vernacular buildings across the UK.
