The Camino de Santiago de Compostela is one of the world's best-known pilgrimage routes and an Itinerario Cultural Europea. Not only the path itself, dating from the 9th century, is of great cultural interest but also the towns, villages and cultural landscapes through which the 'French Route' passes.

Peter Burman has been an active member of SPAB (including committee member, Guardian and trustee) for several decades. With a degree in History of Art and Architecture, he has alternated between working for great conservation organisations (Council for the Care of Churches/Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England; National Trust for Scotland) and being a senior academic (Director of Centre for Conservation Studies, University of York; Professor of Cultural Heritage Management, BTU Cottbus, Germany). The Camino de Santiago de Compostela is one of the world's best-known pilgrimage routes and an Itinerario Cultural Europea. Not only the path itself, dating from the 9th century, is of great cultural interest but also the towns, villages and cultural landscapes through which the 'French Route' passes.

In this talk, first given to a meeting of SPAB Guardians, he reflects on the preservation and conservation issues he encountered while 'treading the path' of pilgrimage. He took a special interest in rural vernacular structures and in the great cathedrals of Leon and Santiago de Compostela and in the conservation challenges which they pose.
