Join the Wales and Marches group on a visit to the archives office, to a former munitions factory, and to Rotherwas Chapel to see its fine Elizabethan timber roof and decorative Victorian interior.

Rotherwas is an industrial part of Hereford and home to Herefordshire Archives and Records Centre, a modern building which opened in 2015.

The munitions filling facility at Rotherwas was one of the largest of its kind in the UK, comprising of more than 370 buildings with 6,000 employees at its peak. Shell filling began in 1916. The site also produced shells for World War II. Today, one of the factories has been repaired and converted into office space, the Shell Store.

The ticket price includes lunch. 

Itinerary

10am - 12pm
We'll meet at Herefordshire Archives and Records Centre for a tour of the archives. The archivist will share with us research on some of the buildings that the SPAB Group have visited on previous visits.
 
12pm - 12.30pm 
An introduction to the history of Rotherwas.
 
1pm - 1.30pm 
A tour of the Shell Store.
 
1.30pm 
Buffet lunch in the Munitions Cafe within the Shell Store. There will be sandwiches, wraps, crisps and tray bakes, as well as coffee and tea. Lunch is included with the ticket price. 
 
3pm 
A visit to Rotherwas Chapel to see its fine Elizabethan timber roof and decorative Victorian interior.
 
4pm 
End of the visit
