Whittington Court is a small Tudor manor house with Jacobean and later additions five miles east of Cheltenham. On september 9th 1592 Queen Elizabeth 'dyned at Mr Coton's at Whytington' on her progress through Gloucestershire.

Today visitors see most of the main rooms including the dining hall with its four arched chimneypiece of around 1590 and the elaborate and ambitious renaissance fireplace in the library.

A massive oak staircase dates from 1637 with an early dog gate gives access to the first floor of the east wing originally concieved as a long gallery but now a series of smaller rooms.

Visitors can also see some of the textile collection belonging to the house. These include silk and block printed dresses from the 18th Century and some beautiful textiles block printed by the houses owner, Jenny Stringer.

The house has a collection of interesting furniture and a library of books by The Whittington Press. The Press, which is housed in the garden will also be open on this day only for the SPAB, and very much continues the arts and crafts tradition of small, crafts led printing presses central to the movement. Their website is now nomadetterpress.com

There is also an excellent tithe barn dating from 1614 to see, some stables that are listed plus a chapel dating from at least the 12th century.

Tea and cake will also be available for an extra cost of £5, please bring cash.

The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.

About the Gloucestershire Regional Group
Lynne Pardoe, Group Organiser, says "It was ten years ago when I came to live in Gloucestershire and, surprised by the absence of a SPAB group, I started one. Since then its gone from strength to strength, with a steady core of regular attenders and an ever changing background of newer members. Since I don’t work in the field of conservation I rely on suggestions to arrange visits which don’t usually open for the public and thankfully, because I’ve been running it so long people know me and will make suggestions, or offer up their own properties for a visit. I love this."
