Visit to Vernacular Cottage in Chaldon Herring
Visit to Vernacular Cottage in Chaldon Herring
Dorset Group
£7.50
Event details
This small thatched cottage is fairly typical of the area, built from materials generally locally sourced to a pattern developed over many years. It has been a second home for some 45 years and as a result has escaped some of the more damaging modernisations which have affected many other such buildings. The new owner wants to preserve its character while making it habitable as a permanent home.
They have kindly agreed to open their doors to a small group of SPAB members before building works commence in May. This is an opportunity to consider all the pressures for modernisation and the dilemmas that they present.
Chaldon Herring, is south of Dorchester and 2 miles from the sea, in the 1920’s became a popular centre for artists and writers.
Meet 1.45pm outside The Sailors Return.
Cost £7.50. pay with registration or cash on the day.
