Event details

Saturday 9 August 10:30am

Join the Essex & Suffolk Group at Ingatestone Hall and St. Mary’s Church, Buttsbury. Lord Petre will show us the hall – in his family since 1539. The church is 14th century and part of the estate.

This is a chance to see inside of Ingatestone Hall, guided by Lord Petre whose family have owned the estate since William Petre bought it in 1539. This will be followed by a visit to the nearby small Church of St Mary’s, built in the 14th Century and part of the estate purchased by the Petre family.  On buying the estate William Petre built the Hall that is substantially what is seen today.

Since 1919 Ingatestone Hall has been the full time residence of the Petre family. Lord Petre has kindly agreed to show us around his home, so there will be lots of information and the chance to ask questions.

After the Hall visit we will reconvene at St Mary’s Church, which is not typically open for historical visits. Although the Hall and Church are only physically half a mile apart, they are 2.5 miles apart by road.

The Church, having been purchased by the Petre family, remained until mid 19th century a Perpetual Curacy with the incumbent chosen and paid by the Petre family without recourse to the Bishop. The church continues to have strong connections to the Petre family and since the 20th century has been the church where family members are buried.
We will be shown around the Church by some of the Church team.

The Church has never had electricity or heating.
