SPAB Autumn Lecture Series 2020: Transformations Part I

SPAB Autumn Lecture Series 2020: Transformations Part I
Join us this autumn for a series of talks exploring historic buildings and the idea of transformation. Through a mixture of recent projects and current thinking about heritage, sustainability and conservation, we consider physical change and new uses for old buildings on the one hand and, on the other, the power of conservation projects to transform places and communities. We will also look at how new ways of thinking about conservation can transform the way people engage with old buildings and historic places.

Heritage Declares is a non-affiliated group of conservation professionals and organisations seeking to raise awareness of the climate emergency within the heritage sector. Launched in autumn 2019 its ten-point Declaration invites people to commit to new ways of working with our shared built heritage to reduce environmental impacts and encourage sustainable maintenance, repair and re-use of existing buildings. The campaign addresses how climate affects heritage and how heritage - old buildings themselves and the decisions, interventions, techniques, materials and technologies we apply to them - can be part of creative solutions. Founder members David Garrard and Hannah Parham explain how and why Heritage Declares came about, what it aims to achieve and its progress so far; engineer Julie Godefroy offers some technical case studies.
