Sussex Group Visit to the Former Midhurst Sanitorium

Join the Sussex Group on a visit to the former Midhurst Sanitorium (King Edward VII Hospital) in West Sussex. The sanitorium was set up to treat tuberculosis and was opened by King Edward VII in 1906.

The eminent architect Charles Holden was involved in the design of the building and the celebrated garden designer Gertrude Jekyll in the design of the grounds.

Later it was a mainstream hospital until closing in 2006. It then lay empty for nearly a decade until City & Country began to redevelop the buildings and site for residential use.

This is a fascinating tour of part of the site including the unique chapel and some of the common areas. Design and Planning Director for City & Country, Simon Vernon-Harcourt will be leading the tour, which may take around an hour to 90 minutes.

The meeting point is the car park.
Parking shouldn’t be an issue although please car share wherever possible. The concierge has confirmed there should be space for attendees on the left of the main car park.
The building is now a fully occupied residential site. Please bear this in mind while on the tour.
You will receive a map and agenda for the tour the day before the visit.

Multiple bookings

As long as there is space on the event, we usually allow you to book for both yourself and a guest. When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.

About the Sussex Regional Group

The Group is run by a committee of five, with Simon Clark as main organiser and Ashley Brown, Alan Keen, Bob Overton-Hart and David Wyatt all also organising events and performing various roles. The current committee has by and large served since 2014, and all live in Sussex but liberally spread across both West and East.
