A one-day course for watermill owners interested in harnessing their water resources to produce micro-hydro power

This new, one-day course will look at the issues and opportunities facing watermill owners considering converting their mill for hydro power.

The event will be held at Hainbury watermill, near Yeovil, which was originally a corn mill. In the 1820s it was converted to a flax-spinning mill however by 1860 the mill had been re equiped for milling grain. The mill burnt down in 1914 and the leat now has an Archimedes turbine producing 80,000 kWh. The course will involve a site visit.

This instructive day will focus on:
- Adapting a mill for hydro use
- The head of water required and types of turbine suitable
- Planning applications, licences and legal issues
- Potential returns for generating electricity
