SPAB Autumn Lecture Series 2020: Transformations Part I

SPAB Autumn Lecture Series 2020: Transformations Part I
Join us this autumn for a series of talks exploring historic buildings and the idea of transformation. Through a mixture of recent projects and current thinking about heritage, sustainability and conservation, we consider physical change and new uses for old buildings on the one hand and, on the other, the power of conservation projects to transform places and communities. We will also look at how new ways of thinking about conservation can transform the way people engage with old buildings and historic places.

Capel Peniel Methodist Chapel stands at the gateway of entrepreneur Williams Maddocks’ planned town of Tremadog in North Wales. Begun in 1808, its striking portico entrance and innovative internal layout proved highly influential in the development of chapel design in Wales, where it is now one of only five chapels listed at Grade I. Following closure and a period of decline, the chapel was acquired by Addoldai Cymru (Welsh Religious Buildings Trust) in 2010. Architect Gethin Roberts describes recent projects to make the chapel weathertight and return its iconic temple front to good repair, as a significant step in the building’s journey towards a sympathetic new use.
