Learn how to improve the thermal performance of traditional buildings without compromising their historic fabric on this masterclass, taught by the expert team from Ty-Mawr Lime.

Discover how to retrofit solid masonry buildings without compromising their health, exploring methods that balance comfort, energy efficiency, and moisture management.

Through practical demonstrations, case studies and technical guidance, you’ll get stuck into a broad spectrum of retrofitting techniques, including both internal and external insulation options, as well as roof insulation and floor systems such as the Sublime Floor System.

Who is this course for?

The course is suitable for homeowners, builders, architects and conservation officers. 

You will learn

• Moisture movement and breathability 
• Traditional building performance 
• Building physics explained in practical terms 
• Lime plasters and insulating lime systems 
• Natural insulation materials
• Common retrofit mistakes and how to avoid them
• Improving comfort and energy efficiency in older building

You will need

You don’t need to be a specialist – you just need to have an interest in traditional buildings, retrofit, lime materials, or building conservation.

What to bring or wear

Please wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather, sturdy footwear and gloves. Parts of this masterclass will take place outdoors.

Tutor(s)

Since 1996 Tŷ-Mawr Lime Ltd has been delivering practical workshops and seminars designed to re-invigorate traditional building skills and knowledge to use traditional building materials efficiently and effectively. Over 12,000 delegates have attended its training centre on courses and many more for technical and open days. 

Assessment / Accreditation

There is no formal assessment for this course, but we can provide a Certificate of Attendance upon request.

Accessibility

The course will take place in the barn area  at Shankill Castle. As this is a historic site, access may vary across different areas of the venue.
