Event details

Saturday 20 May 2023, starting at 10.30 am.

In the 1160’s St Briavel’s Castle was an important royal castle on the border of England and Wales. Nestling on a steep slope above the River Wye, it was built in the early 12th century and was the residence of the warden of the Forest of Dean. It was subsequently rebuilt by Henry II with a small but impressive keep.

The area was the centre of the medieval iron industry. We are visiting an ironworks in the afternoon - please book separately if you'd like to join this visit too.

Most of the castle we see today dates from the 13th century and is Grade I listed. It is a youth hostel and attendees are welcome to book to stay - mention SPAB in your booking to be allocated rooms close to others in our group.

The group will tour the building with a guide and learn about the building and its current-day maintenance and management.

We meet at 10.30 and our visit will end with tea and cake.

Multiple bookings
As long as there is space on the event, we usually allow you to book for both yourself and a guest. When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.

About the Gloucestershire Regional Group
Lynne Pardoe, Group Organiser, says "It was over ten years ago when I came to live in Gloucestershire and, surprised by the absence of a SPAB group, I started one. Since then it's gone from strength to strength, with a steady core of regular attenders and an ever-changing background of newer members. Since I don’t work in the field of conservation I rely on suggestions to arrange visits which don’t usually open to the public and thankfully, because I’ve been running it so long people know me and will make suggestions, or offer up their own properties for a visit. I love this."
