Join us on a behind-the-scenes tour of Tarlair’s historic lido. This is a fantastic opportunity to see how this Category A listed Art Deco pool is being brought back to life.

The once-glamourous buildings and pool had fallen into disrepair since closing in 1995. Parts of the triple-level pool were made safe in 2013, but the associated buildings remained at risk.

Right now, Studio Octupi and Heritage Architecture are working on an exciting project to bring the Old Pavilion, tearooms and facilities back into use as a community cafe and workshop space.

On the visit, you’ll see first-hand how the project is unfolding. There will also be plenty of time for thought-provoking discussion about conservation approaches to a 1930s building.

We will be making a donation from our ticket sales to the Friends of Tarlair to support their future works.

Who is it for?

Whether you love Art Deco buildings, or you’re a professional wanting to learn more about conservation works to a 20th century building, this visit is for you! Both Members and Non-Members are welcome to attend.

The pools are yet to be fully repaired but the bay at Tarlair is a popular spot for outdoor swimmers, if you’d like to swim before or after the event.

You will need

You will need to wear shoes suitable for a site visit and weather-appropriate clothes. Site hats and other PPE will be provided.

The speaker

You will be accompanied by Declan Cahill, a 2016 SPAB Scholar and building surveyor for the conservation elements of the project.

Declan will provide insight into the research that informed the proposals of reinstatement, the survey and development of the repairs, and the design philosophy behind the new extension.
