Event details

A chance to view repair works to this beautiful 17th-century chapel. The east window is currently removed for conservation and is being reinstated in early July. In addition the ceiling is being repaired after a 1950s restoration and Alan Lamb from Swan Farm Studios will be cleaning and redecorating the many heraldic devices which adorn the ceiling. Other woodwork is being cleaned and internal walls redecorated. A full bird cage scaffold will be up enabling a close-up inspection of the ceiling for the first time in 70 years.

Lunch at a local pub or café in the historic covered market in oxford is a possibility followed by a visit to a private house in North Hinksey just outside the city boundary. Rumoured to be a hunting lodge of Charles II it has recently changed hands and the current owner has yet to embark on a refurbishment so it is in a relatively untouched state from 1920s. The owner should be there to give us a flavour of the history which is currently being researched.

Numbers will be limited due to operational requirements to about 25 people.

You must be reasonably fit to climb stairs and scaffold and be happy with heights. Suitable attire and footwear needed.

Good public transport from the Botley (Seacourt Park & Ride) will reach both the College and, later, on foot from the Park & Ride to the house.

Cost to be advised later but won’t be expensive! Email the organiser Martin bbo@spab.org.uk to reserve your place.

About the Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, and Oxfordshire Regional Group

The BBO group organises seminars, talks and visits to buildings of interest, trying where possible to add value by arranging access to places not normally open to the public. We also visit buildings undergoing repair so members can see the work in progress and discuss with artisans and conservators their techniques, approach and materials.
