Event details
Saturday 12 March 2022, 10.30 am
SPAB in Devon are reviving our programme of events with these visits, which were postponed in March 2020.
Tuckers Maltings, Teign Road, Newton Abbot was until recently one of only two functioning traditional maltings in England. Sadly, it is now closed but the building itself and the remaining equipment are of considerable interest and this is likely to be a last opportunity to visit it.
Meet at the Taphouse pub, next to Teignworthy Brewery at 10.30 am. There is a car park at Osborne Street. Food may be available later at the Taphouse; details to be confirmed.
Newton’s Place, Wolborough St, Newton Abbot, is a formerly redundant Grade II listed 19th century church, imaginatively converted to a museum, community hub and Town Council offices. See https://newtonsplace.org.
There will be a presentation about the works to the building and members will be able to see the conservation undertaken such as the chancel ceiling, stained glass, pulpit etc. Members will also be able to enjoy a private visit to the new museum.
Meet at 2.00 pm outside the museum. Newton’s Place is about ¾ mile from the Maltings. There is parking at Newfoundland Way car park next to Newton’s Place and other car parks nearby. There are a number of cafes and pubs nearby.
NB: There will be a charge of £5.00 (cash on the day) to cover costs, and donations to the Newton’s Place Project would be welcome.
Multiple bookings
As long as there is space on the event, we usually allow you to book for both yourself and a guest. When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.
About the Devon Regional Group
The Devon Group was one of the first Regional Groups to be formed, over 20 years ago by Jane Schofield. Since then we have had a steady programme of between three and five events a year. We have a large mailing list with an enthusiastic core of supporters, including several members from other counties who often take a short holiday to include our visits. All ages are welcome to events which are arranged on a Saturday wherever possible and consist of a morning and afternoon visit to buildings with a similar theme, with a suitably interesting pub for optional lunch, if one can be found. Over the years we have visited open hall houses, Dartmoor longhouses, military buildings including the Citadel and Royal William Yard in Plymouth, follies such as Haldon Belvedere, castles, new cob cottages and industrial sites such as the mines of Exmoor or the granite quarries of Dartmoor.
Accessibility: please contact the Group Organiser before booking to discuss any special access requirements.
