Event details
Please join us for a visit to the Walbrook Mithraeum, now housed in the award-winning Bloomberg European Headquarters building.
Jane Sidell, Historic England's long-standing Inspector of Ancient Monuments for London will provide a commentary on the site and the issues which have arisen since its re-discovery.
The Walbrook Mithraeum is the remains of a Roman Temple found at the heart of Roman Londinium in the immediate post-WW2 era, prior to major redevelopment following the Blitz. The discovery of the temple sparked huge public interest, with over 30,000 people queuing to visit, but also led to questions in Parliament about its future preservation. This in turn caused considerable consternation about the impact of archaeological discoveries upon development, something which continues today.
The temple remains were carefully recorded, removed, stored and re-erected in 1962, on the wrong site, and poorly presented. The structure was subsequently listed for its part in the social history of the City, not for its archaeological interest. Recently, it has moved again, to accommodate the Bloomberg building, and its re-presentation has been the subject of enormous discussions about context, authenticity, and public engagement.
