Event details
Friday 27 June, 10 – 1pm
Join the Sussex Group for a day uncovering the rich history of Old Shoreham. Starting with the elegant 18th-century Toll Bridge over the River Adur, we’ll explore St Nicholas’ Church and two privately-owned listed houses.
Our visit includes a guided tour of St Nicolas’ Church, the oldest of Shoreham’s two Anglo-Saxon churches. With parts dating back to the early 10th century and later medieval additions, it’s a rare example of a building that tells its story through centuries of architectural layers.
We’ll also have the chance to step inside two privately owned 18th-century listed homes—Old Shoreham Farmhouse and Adur Lodge—where we’ll consider their earlier origins and significance within the conservation area. Along the way, we’ll take in other historic buildings that make this village so distinctive, before finishing with an optional lunch at the Red Lion Inn, a characterful pub with possible 16th-century roots and poetic connections to Tennyson’s Rizpah.
