Event details

Friday 14 April, 2-4 pm. Refreshments from 1.30 pm

Historic England describes the Church of St Peter and St Paul as a prime example of Georgian church architecture outside London. It was rebuilt after a fire between 1732 and 1739 to designs by John and William Bastard.

The Grade 1 Church has just undergone major roofing works and the visit will allow us to view the works at close quarters. We will be lead by architect Tomas Griffin, from benjamin and beauchamp architects ltd, into the roof void over the nave and chancel where we will see the structural and timber repairs carried out.

We will proceed in small groups onto the roof parapet to look at the stone repair, re-tiling and lead works and discuss the difficulties of incorporating modern detailing on old structures and how this has been achieved. Within the body of the Church we will see the plaster repairs carried out and redecoration and re-gilding to the apse ceiling.

For those wishing to see the roof works access is via a stone spiral staircase, headroom is limited in places.

Sarah Lock, Church Warden has kindly offered to provide hot drinks and biscuits (possibly even cake)in the Church from 1.30.
