Event details

Please join the London Group on Thursday 19 September at 6.30 pm for our Walk to Nowhere.

The Walk will be led by Sarah Harrison, a classicist, who has lived and worked in Marylebone and Regent’s Park almost all her life. The Walk will explore the development of Marylebone from a medieval village on the River Tyburn to the present day.

We will look at its 18th century expansion under its great estate owners (the Howard de Walden estate maintains a prominent role in present day Marylebone), examining a number of important churches by Gibbs, Hardwick, Nash and Soane. We will also consider the work of important social reformers, notably Octavia Hill (founder of the National Trust), who lived in Marylebone.

We will walk up Portland Place past the Adam brothers' 1770s houses for the Duke of Portland and Broadcasting House and the RIBA building of the 1930s, cross into Regent’s Park and admire Nash’s stunning achievement before returning via Marylebone High Street, ending the walk at the Lamb and Flag in St Christopher's Place (at approximately 8-8.30pm).

This guided walk will start in Cavendish Square gardens (under the shelter of John Lewis facing the gardens if it is raining hard).

These tours are free but donations are welcome. There is a suggested donation of £5pp.

Bookings: Bookings for this event are via eventbrite

About the London Group
The SPAB London group was formed in 2015 and it brings together over 1,000 SPAB members living or working in the metropolitan area. London’s diversity of built heritage gives members the opportunity to share knowledge of historic buildings, conservation projects and craft skills. The SPAB London group offers visits to see conservation works on historic buildings, lectures, concerts and its monthly Walks to Nowhere, guided walking tours discovering London’s many distinctive neighbourhoods and ending at an historic pub. Recent walks traversed Bloomsbury, Smithfield and Borough.
