Event details

The talk will be held in person on Tuesday 22nd March at 6.30pm.

Please join the London SPAB group for a Members' Evening at St Bartholomew the Great. Our theme is the parish church, its glories and future.

Join us at the City of London's most complete Norman church. We are privileged to meet in the City's only surviving medieval priory. Built in 1123 (next year the church celebrates its 900th Anniversary), Pevsner describes the building as the most important 12th century monument in London, albeit much of the original has been lost.

The English parish church represents an extraordinary achievement. In most villages and many towns, they are the finest building. But they face many threats. What is their future?

Our speakers are:

John Goodall, architectural editor of Country Life. His recent books include Parish Church Treasures (2015) and The Castle (2022); and

Duncan Wilson, OBE, Chief Executive, Historic England

Wine will be available at the event.

About the London Group
The SPAB London group was formed in 2015 and it brings together over 1,000 SPAB members living or working in the metropolitan area. London’s diversity of built heritage gives members the opportunity to share knowledge of historic buildings, conservation projects and craft skills. The SPAB London group offers visits to see conservation works on historic buildings, lectures, concerts and its monthly Walks to Nowhere, guided walking tours discovering London’s many distinctive neighbourhoods and ending at an historic pub. Recent walks traversed Bloomsbury, Smithfield and Borough.
