Event details

Discover Faversham’s rich heritage on a guided walking tour led by expert local guides. Explore timber-framed houses, Georgian and Victorian landmarks, and medieval Abbey Street, with stories that bring the town’s history to life.

After a short welcome and introduction, we shall start our guided walking tour of the oldest parts of Faversham. This will include the timber framed houses (many listed) of West Street and Tanners Street. We’ll return via the Victorian Almshouses and the ‘Georgianised’ house of Edward Jacob, Faversham’s eighteenth-century historian.

We shall break for lunch at 12.45pm. This can be separately purchased by members at one of the cafés or pubs in the town, which is the home of Shepherd Neame Brewery. Your walking guides will be happy to make suggestions.

We shall reconvene at 1.45pm at the Guildhall to take a short walk to medieval Abbey Street and the Tudor Old Grammar School.

Our day will conclude with tea at Faversham’s Guildhall followed by a talk by Jonathan Carey, Faversham Society Trustee and Conservation Architect. Members will have the opportunity to learn about the history of Faversham, the role of the conservation architect Antony Swaine in the 1960s and the civic society, as well as the twenty first century developments that pose difficulties for a historic town.
