Event details

6 April 2023, starting at 1pm

(Please note this is a change from the originally advertised date of 21 March, due to adverse weather conditions during March affecting the progress of works and access to the site)

Join Pinnacle Conservation Ltd, York and conservation architect David Beaumont Riba AABC and SPAB member at the Grade II listed Albert Memorial to learn about the recent rescue and repairs to the building

The session is expected to last about 2 hours and will be in three parts:

  • Introduction by Jamie Reed, Place Development and Investment Project Officer (East) Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Jamie will talk about the background of the project;
  • Description of the design and repair issues by the project architect David Beaumont
  • How the contractor has managed the project difficulties. They will also talk about the practical problems of rebuilding, the stone repairs, mortar mix and particularly the conservation works of delicate stonework. Demonstration of craft skills and the opportunity to design and cut your own masons’ mark to take home.

The site is within the Saltburn Valley Gardens and accessed by a ramped path by the bandstand. The path can be slippery. The Memorial is on a level plateau on the valley side. The works are at high level and we intend to see these from the scaffold. We will be having our introductions and mason mark-making at ground level for those who do not wish to go on the scaffold.

You will be provided with hard hats and we recommend that you come with warm and waterproof clothing, gloves and walking boots.

There are toilet facilities at the contractor compound on Glenside, on road parking and we will provide some light refreshments.

Places are limited so please book before 30 March to secure your place.

Multiple bookings
As long as there is space on the event, we usually allow you to book for both yourself and a guest. When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.
