Event details
On this one-day course you will learn about the significant structural challenges encountered at the Old House Project (OHP) and the proposals recommended to address them. Led by Ed Morton, a leading CARE-accredited structural engineer, you will be presented with the problems he initially discovered at the site, before being guided through the appraisals and investigations carried out, including structural assessment, survey work and archaeology, to help solve them. Through discussion and problem-solving exercises, you will consider potential structural solutions, before being shown those which have or are in the process of being implemented following Ed Morton’s proposals. In keeping with the SPAB’s approach to sympathetic repair, these work with the existing fabric wherever possible and include a novel solution to the repair of the OHP’s bulging west wall.
The course is being held within the Old House Project itself, a live site where work is currently underway, giving you a rare opportunity to learn directly from the project’s conservation structural engineer, while witnessing some of his proposals being implemented by our contractors, Owlsworth IJP, in real time. Alongside this immersive case study of the OHP, you will also be presented a talk on conservation engineering principals, with other case studies of conservation building projects Ed Morton has been involved in, including the Chinese Lattice Floor at Wollaton Hall. which the delegates will be asked how to solve before Ed explains what he did.
Attendance certificates are available for this course on request. SPAB courses are accredited by the IHBC for continuing professional development.
