Living with Your Old House Course

16 November 2019, 10:00 - 16:30

This new one-day course for home owners will introduce the SPAB Approach to living with your old house - to undertake home renovations and surface redecoration, explore your home’s history or retrofit your building for energy efficiency. The course will be delivered by experts in their field and will offer advice on building regulations, planning permission and listed building consent, working with professionals, sources for house history research and inspiration for new design extensions or adaptations to your old building.

This course will be relevant for home owners, managers of period properties and building conservation professionals.
CPD certificates will be available on request.

Topics covered by this course will be:
•    Researching your Home’s History: a beginner’s guide
•    Historic Surfaces – Paints and Wallpapers
•    Retrofitting Old Houses for Energy Efficiency
•    Understanding the Legal Framework:
navigating the planning system and listed building consent
•    New Design for Old Houses: extension and adaptation

The course will be led by Roger Hunt, author and journalist. Roger is co-author of the SPAB publications Old House Handbook, Old House Eco Handbook and New Design for Old Buildings. Other speakers on the course include Ellen Leslie, heritage consultant and historian, Rosie Shaw and Phillipa McDonnell, conservators for Lincoln Conservation, and Christina Emerson, SPAB Head of Casework.

The course will be held at the SPAB headquarters in London - an opportunity to view the inside of the only remaining Georgian house in Spital Square. The building dates from around 1740 and originally belonged to a Huguenot silk merchant. It was rescued from dereliction by the Spitalfields Trust before being sold to the SPAB in the early 1980s.

With opportunities to ask questions throughout the day, the course is also an excellent opportunity to meet and learn from other property owners. Copies of the SPAB publications Old House Handbook (RRP £25) and Old House Eco Handbook (RRP £30) will be available to purchase at reduced rates, and discounted SPAB membership will also be offered to those who join on the day.

Living with Your Old House is a companion course to our other course for home owners - Understanding Your Old House (last run in May 2019) - which offers advice on maintenance and care of old buildings, understanding why old buildings are different, dealing with damp and timber decay, and an introduction to lime. The Understanding Your Old House course will be repeated in 2020.
