Fantastic speakers & fascinating subject, I loved it! Both Patrick and Allyson were so friendly, kind and generous with their time when I asked them questions.

Event details
The SPAB have once again teamed up with Historic Royal Palaces to offer a programme of one-day masterclasses specialising in building conservation and repair. Combining lectures, practical demonstrations and hands-on workshops, these masterclasses are designed for those who are professionally involved with buildings (e.g. architects, surveyors, engineers, planners, builders, contractors, craftsmen and women). The masterclasses are recognised for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).
Focusing on paint and wallpaper (examples of which participants will be able to handle and examine up-close), and using the unique setting of Hampton Court Palace as a case study, the aim of this masterclass is to consider how historic finishes are investigated and conserved.
Topics covered (using case studies)
Types of finishes
Colour choices and sources of pigment
Making traditional paint
Paint sampling and analysis
Investigating and identifying historic wallpapers
Conservation of wallpaper
Recreating wallpaper schemes
There will also be a walking tour of Hampton Court Palace to look at case studies and discuss past work.
Course tutors
Patrick Baty - Historical Paint Consultant
Allyson McDermott- Historic Interiors Specialist
