The Old Vicarage, Methwold was brought to the attention of SPAB and was scheduled for demolition before Monica Dance (SPAB Secretary 1939-1978) stepped in, bought and sensitively repaired the building. It is a timber-framed house of extraordinary richness. Only a single room wide, it is continuously jettied along its west elevation. The building’s chief glory is the spectacular stepped brick end-gable decorated with moulded terracotta ornament and an octagonal chimneystack. Those booking their holiday at Methwold will also find wall paintings dating from the 16th century.

Manor Farm, near Pulham Market in Norfolk, a thatched, timber-framed yeoman's farmhouse also escaped demolition because of action by Monica and Charles Dance who bought the building in 1948 and were responsible for a characteristically sensitive repair of the decaying fabric around its steadfast oak skeleton.

Today both buildings serve as a practical teaching sites for SPAB Scholars and Fellows who have helped with repairs and conservation to preserve their fragile materials.

Landmark properties, sleep up to 16 people, and make special places for friends and family gatherings, starting from £25 per person per night. They offer romantic settings for couples and relaxing boltholes for a solo traveller. Many are off grid but plenty are in cities and towns, accessible by train and most welcome dogs.
