HS2 Statement

The SPAB deeply regrets the demolitions that will be necessitated by the construction of the HS2 rail line. No matter how well a historic building is recorded, this does not offer sufficient mitigation for its destruction. Unfortunately, under the High Speed Rail Act 2017, which modified the controls related to listed buildings, we have little or no scope for objection. Nevertheless, we would urge that planned demolitions do not take place until there is absolute certainty that development is proceeding in an area.

As there appears to be a commitment to maximising the recording and archaeological potential of the listed buildings to be demolished we would call upon HS2 Ltd to allow relevant organisations to carry out educational visits in this context.

This statement will be updated as and when the SPAB receives more information.
