Building Traditional Skills in Ireland with a New Grant

News
rachel.stoplar@spab.org.uk

We’re delighted that the Heritage Council has awarded SPAB Ireland 100% of its requested funding for a year-long pilot programme addressing critical gaps in traditional building conservation skills.

Ireland’s historic building stock is under pressure from climate change, inappropriate retrofit and a growing shortage of specialist building skills. While many people working in construction are highly skilled, there are limited opportunities to learn how to work with historic fabric or progress into specialist conservation practice.

Through our pilot programme, Safeguarding Traditional Building Skills, we’ll provide some of the practical skills needed to look after the island’s irreplaceable historic buildings, from lead and copper roofing to decorative plasterwork.

What we'll be doing

  • Hands-on masterclasses taught by Ireland’s leading craftspeople
  • A Working Party in Co. Clare during Ireland Heritage Week, 15-23 August
  • An online lecture series
  • A series of podcast episodes

Check out the events so far and subscribe to our eNewsletter to hear when new events are launched and podcasts available.

Many thanks to The Heritage Council for funding this project.
