COP26 - Energy Saving in Glasgow's Merchant City

Merchant City Walking Tour

Part of central Glasgow was rebranded and revitalised to offer new homes and a mixed economy in former food markets and textile warehouses. Rehabilitation saves the embodied energy that would otherwise be needed to build equivalent new homes, especially when the structure of a building is kept as well as a façade. The walk will touch upon impacts of plantation economies, exploiting enslaved people, facadism, meanwhile uses, gap sites and the Townscape Heritage Initiative in shaping what we see today.

Mark Watson (Institute of Historic Building Conservation and Historic Environment Scotland) will guide this walking tour around the Merchant City area of Glasgow.  The route will start at and return to The Scottish Civic Trust, The Tobacco Merchants House, 42 Miller Street, Glasgow G1 1DT and will last approximately 1 hour. 

Accessibility and risk: some crossings of streets will be necessary so please take care and use pedestrian crossings where appropriate. There will be kerbs but the only flights of stairs are within Tobacco Merchant’s House. Face coverings are optional outdoors, compulsory indoors, unless medically exempt, and numbers are limited to those who booked, to promote social distancing.

We will finish back at the Scottish Civic Trust where there will be the opportunity to go inside the building, and where SPAB Scotland will have a temporary office for the day.

When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.

About SPAB Scotland
Members of the SPAB living and working in Scotland decided to form their own semi-autonomous group in 1995. Scotland has its own building traditions, architectural language and property laws, all of which are best dealt with locally. All members of the SPAB residing in Scotland are automatically members of SPAB Scotland.
