The Bard's House: Yr Ysgwrn, Snowdonia A cultural symbol for the people of Wales A lecture presented by Niall Phillips (Purcell)

SPAB Autumn Lecture Series 2019
The Bold and the Beautiful: exploring new design for old buildings

The SPAB believes that, alongside careful repair of historic fabric, sympathetic new interventions can help to keep old buildings in sound condition and active use.  Good new design is hard to define, but readily recognisable - respecting the old, making creative use of materials, attention to detail,  excellent craftsmanship, and establishing a dialogue between new and old. In this series of lectures we explore three projects illustrating contrasting approaches to new design for old buildings.

The Bard's House: Yr Ysgwrn: a cultural symbol for the people of Wales
Presented by Niall Phillips (Purcell)
21 November 2019, 18:15 - 20:30

This simple farmstead has become emblematic of the life and achievements of one of Wales’ most acclaimed poets, Ellis Humphrey Evans - better known by his Bardic name, Hedd Wyn.  It was his home until his untimely death in the First World War. The site was acquired by the Snowdonia National Park in 2012. Niall Phillips describes sifting the site’s layers of significance to inform the award-winning project to conserve the buildings and their special character, whilst at the same time creating contemporary facilities for visitors to the site.

The lecture will be followed by an informal reception.
