Walking Tour:

Starting at the new V&A Museum of Design (which is next to the railway station), we will walk alongside the river, under the road bridge, past the patent slip, and former ship yard andtannery buildings to the A-listed Victoria Dock. Crossing the modern footbridge there will be a view of the 1824 frigate, HMS Unicorn, and we will continue past the transit sheds and clock tower warehouse to Water’s Edge, a shed recently restored and converted to small units where we’ll meet the conservation architect responsible. Camperdown Dock and connecting gates adjacent.

From Water’s Edge we will pass the old Custom House, and make our way up Dens Street  to Hotel Indigo for lunch at the Daisy Tasker restaurant in the restored A listed former Lower Dens mill complex. Our building visits are reckoned to be the two most significant recent conservation projects in the city.

After lunch we will make our way via city centre streets westwards, taking in the Cowgate Arch (one of only two town wall gates in Scotland), the historic Cowgate, Albert Square, the Howff, West Port, and Park Place to the Carnelley Building.

Dr Matthew Jarron, director of the University of Dundee’s Museum Collections, will introduce us to the building and briefly outline the importance of the D'Arcy Thompson Zoological collection amongst other treasures.

DHET and partners have produced a series of Dundee Heritage Walk guides available on line at www.dundeeheritagewalk.com as a self-guided trail leaflets which will be available as handouts. Our walk is an amalgam of sections of four of the trails and is led by one of the series authors.

Lecture:

'John Ruskin (1819-1900), the ‘Good Steward’, and his influence for us today'

This lecture will explore the may-sided nature of Ruskin’s genius, which is currently being celebrated in a major exhibition at Two Temple Place in London. In his Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849) and in other writings he gave intellectual substance to ideas about stewardship of the earth’s resources which are uncannily relevant to the present day. He urged us to ‘cherish, above all things, local associations and hereditary skill’. His respect for the age values of ancient buildings led him to inspire the foundation of the SPAB (1877) and the National Trust (1895). His own foundation, the Guild of St George (1871), enabled him to put theory into practice and the Guild still flourishes today.
