Join the SPAB London Group and Historic England’s Joanna Smith for a guided tour of South Shoreditch, once a principal centre of England’s furniture industry from the mid-19th to mid-20th century.
Many of the buildings that housed its workshops, saw mills, warehouses and showrooms remain today, and yet it takes some imagination to fully appreciate the hive of activity which existed in the streets during South Shoreditch's heyday - with furniture being passed from building to building to be assembled and finished, almost like a production line.
Jo will take us around the streets, looking at the architectural legacy of the trade and describe some of the processes and places involved in the making and selling furniture (and perhaps a few other industries as well) - an event not to be missed!
Of course, it will be that spooky time of year when the nights are drawing in, so please be prepared for some dark lanes and alleyways. Feel free to bring a torch!
The meeting location will be provided in the confirmation emails.
Please note: the event takes place after dark and may include narrow or dimly lit lanes — bring a torch and wear comfortable footwear.
