Join us for a rare opportunity to visit Goddards, Abinger Hammer, Sir Edwin Lutyens’ remarkable Arts and Crafts house with gardens laid out by Gertrude Jekyll.
Designed in 1898 for Frederick and Jessie Mirrielees, Goddards is an important early work by Lutyens and a key example of the Arts and Crafts movement in Surrey. The house demonstrates Lutyens’ skill in combining traditional materials and craftsmanship with inventive planning, including its extraordinary two-lane bowling alley – a striking and highly unusual survival.
The gardens, laid out by Gertrude Jekyll, complement the architecture with carefully structured planting and strong seasonal colour, reflecting the close working relationship between architect and designer that defined this period.
This is a rare opportunity to explore a masterpiece that is seldom open to the public. There will be time to look around the house and gardens and to ask questions during the visit.
Tea will be served following the tour.
