Visit the courtyard garden at SPAB HQ, 37 Sptial Square. Also open in the group: 21 Pricelet St, 21 Wilkes St, The Rectory 2 Fournier St, 20 Fournier St, 29 Fournier St and 31 Fournier St.

The SPAB courtyard garden is an excellent example of what can be grown in a small space with virtually no direct sun. Shade-lovers such as ferns, hardy geraniums, Hosta, Astilbe, Aruncus, Sarcococca and Japanese grasses all grow very happily. Many of the ferns are 'native' to the garden. Pelargoniums also thrive and flower all year round. We also have planting in a trough at the front of the building where there is a little more sun and we concentrate on bee-friendly flowers there such as asters, Fuchsia 'Janie', hardy geraniums, foxgloves, aquilegias, and we don't mind if these self-seed a little around the trough. It's a mini-cottage garden in the heart of Spitalfields! We always do a small plant sale with proceeds going to NGS with plants either propagated from the garden or grown by Julie, our volunteer gardener, at home in Oxfordshire. This year we will have a mix of shade and sun-lovers such as baby hydrangeas, hellebores, hardy geraniums, annual plants, and some Begonia houseplants. All in small pots so they are easy to carry home.
