St Andrew's Grafham and Bramley Mill

Registration is closed for this event
Join our Kent & Surrey Group for a visit to St Andrew's Church and Bramley Mill - both built of local Bargate stone

1 June 2023, starting at 2pm

St Andrew’s Church was designed as a total unity 1861-1864 by Henry Woodyer, who lived at nearby Grafham Grange, and one of his best churches.

It is of local Bargate with a circular bellcote under a shingled needle spirelet and an apsed chancel.  The interior was richly decorated, a rare sight for a Victorian country church, but it was the subject of a puritanical whitewashing in the 1950s.

Small areas have been scraped and the possibility of further uncovering will be discussed.  The church has seven banners which had fallen into disrepair and have been recently conserved.  The church was originally the equal of St Peter, Hascombe, which has its rich and intricate decorations intact.

We will then visit Bramley Mill, also built off local Bargate.  It was converted as his own home by John Brownrigg, architect of the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford.

Price: £20 per head to include tea and cake at Bramley Mill and a donation towards the repair work at St Andrew's.

Multiple bookings
As long as there is space on the event, we usually allow you to book for both yourself and a guest. When completing the booking form, you will be asked to select the number of people and put in your own details on the first page, then to put in your second person's details on the next page. The event fee shown on each of these pages is for the individual person - you will be shown the total amount due once you get to the summary page.

About the Kent and Surrey Regional Group
The group has run continuously since its foundation in 1994. We aim to hold around 10 to 12 events a year catering for a wide range of interest. Events include visits to buildings undergoing conservation and repair projects to allow members to see conservation in action, buildings and landscapes of historical and architectural interest, and visits to some of south east England’s most significant buildings including behind the scenes tours of Cathedrals, Royal Palaces and major military fortifications.
