Volunteering with the SPAB

Volunteers play a vital role at the SPAB, we currently have over 30 fantastic volunteers who work at our offices in London and regionally fulfilling a variety of duties, from helping us run events, to interpreting the archives and assisting with our enormous volume of casework. Find out how you can get involved with the SPAB.

Jobs Bulletin volunteers needed

The SPAB are looking for up to three volunteers who can help us put together our monthly jobs bulletin for members. The jobs bulletin features vacancies from across the building conservation sector, including in architecture, building surveying, engineering, building crafts, visitor services, outreach and communications, archaeology and education. Volunteers would be helping our membership officer to find suitable vacancies to include, mainly via web searches, but also by contacting relevant organisations to advertise the service.

This is a role that can be done completely from home and the time spent on it can be flexible as well – it could be done as a half-day to a day per month, or in an hour or two a week. We envision that this role will be done from home even once the current restrictions are lifted, but volunteers would also be welcome to travel into our office in Spitalfields, London if convenient for them, in which case we will reimburse reasonable travel expenses.

If you have any questions about the role or about the SPAB, please contact our membership officer, Lucy Jacob, at membership@spab.org.uk.

To apply, please send an email telling us a brief bit about yourself and why you are interested in volunteering to Lucy at membership@spab.org.uk.

Practical Volunteering

We have occasional short term opportunities for volunteers to assist with practical building conservation projects around the UK and in Ireland, including our annual Working Party. These are great opportunities to develop your hands-on skills, alongside a team of experts. If you are interested in hearing when practical volunteering opportunities arise, please sign up here.

Work experience

The SPAB does not have an internship programme. However, from time to time we are able to offer short work experience opportunities for young people (usually school or university students in vacation time), giving an introduction to the variety of tasks the SPAB undertakes and a taster of working within a building conservation charity. If you would be interested in a short placement with the SPAB, please contact: education@spab.org.uk
