ARCHIVE OFFICER, part time

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) wishes to recruit a part-time Archive Officer to manage and enable access to its historic archive, raise awareness of it within and beyond the Society, and contribute to planning for the archive’s future.

This is a two-days/week post based within the SPAB’s Education & Training team for a fixed term of two years. The Archive Officer will respond to researcher enquiries, contribute to management and development of the archive, and support colleagues across the Society in creative use of archive material in all areas of the SPAB’s work. A key element of this newly-created role will be to develop, create and maintain a comprehensive new catalogue for the archive.

Location:  Based at the SPAB’s headquarters in Spitalfields, London, with occasional travel to other locations as required.

Salary: £26,000 pro rata.

Volunteering with the SPAB

Volunteers play a vital role at the SPAB, we currently have over 30 fantastic volunteers who work at our offices in London and regionally fulfilling a variety of duties, from helping us run events, to interpreting the archives and assisting with our enormous volume of casework. Find out how you can get involved with the SPAB.

 

Volunteer at the Old House Show

We need your help to make our first show a success. We are looking for committed and enthusiastic volunteers to work at the Old House Show on Friday 7 – Saturday 8 September to help SPAB staff run the different sections of the show, such as the demonstration area, the advice clinic and the lecture space.

We are also looking for a volunteer to work alongside the Old House Show organiser in the run up to the event on 7-8 September. You must be able to commit 2-4 days a month from July to September, including the show dates. The position is based at the SPAB HQ in Spitalfields, London.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain significant experience working on a large-scale event and meet people who are passionate about conservation. Our volunteer will be preparing materials for the show and act as lead volunteer over the two days. We are looking for a competent administrator, proficient in Microsoft Office, with excellent communications skills. For more information or to apply please contact Pippa Evans at the SPAB.
 

Work experience

The SPAB does not have an internship programme. However, from time to time we are able to offer short work-experience opportunities for young people (usually school or university students in vacation time), giving an introduction to the variety of tasks the SPAB undertakes and a taster of working within a building conservation charity.
