Join the SPAB Yorkshire group for a tour of St Denys Church, in York, led by architect Andrew Boyce and Church Warden Dr Charles Kightly. Andrew is an Architect with 40 years + experience and currently Practice Director in the York office of Donald Insall Associates (DIA), as an Historic Buildings Architect specialising in all aspects of conservation and historic building repairs, renovations, refurbishment and development.

We will also be accompanied by the church warden Dr Charles Kightly.

The small grade 1 listed church of St Denys has a long and complex history: much reduced from its original size, it dates in its present form from the 14th, 15th and 19th centuries, with a re-sited Norman doorway of c.1160. It has one of the finest sets of mediaeval glass in York, filling 7 of the 11 windows: there is a little very early glass [c.1200], but most of the windows date from the mid-14th to mid-15th centuries, and most are York-made glass. Substantial fragments of previously unknown 14th/15th century glass came to light during restorations in  2017-18. There is also Powell and Co impressed glass of c.1847.

The church had strong links with the Percy family, earls of Northumberland, who lived nearby and have left their mark on it, including a late 15th century heraldic ceiling.
