Join the SPAB Greater Manchester Group for an architect-led tour of the Church of the Holy Name, Manchester, with Mark Pearce of Pearce Architecture.
Holy Name is one of Manchester’s most striking church buildings: a Grade I listed Gothic Revival church by Joseph Hansom and son, built in 1869–71, with its later tower by Adrian Gilbert Scott completed in 1928. Its dramatic scale, slender piers and rib-vaulted interior give the church an extraordinary sense of space, while its construction combines sandstone, brick, terracotta and reinforced concrete. The building today is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
This guided visit will focus on the recent programme of tower fabric repairs. Mark Pearce will explain the condition issues found in the tower, the repair approach taken, and the practical challenges involved in caring for this complex historic structure. The works included extensive repairs to the concrete structure of the tower, renewal of the concrete roof deck, and associated repairs to roof coverings, rainwater goods, masonry, access routes, ladders, steps and walkways.
